OMG. Meet the Wedding Smashers. I first met the smashers at the Harlequin & Romance Bridal Bazaar in conjunction with Benefit Cosmetics last year. They were playing some funky tunes whilst I had my makeup done and I really never looked back. Not only do they have their finger on the pulse of top tracks, but they also have an understanding of old school and an appreciation for all genres of music. This makes me feel better as when I met Max to discuss my music preferences, he didn’t even bat an eyelash when I insisted on having Britney Spears, Beyonce and Madonna in my repertoire. He also managed to completely disguise any sort of disbelief when my fiance suggested Lil’ Wayne for our first dance. He is one cool dude. I asked Max and his team of fellow smashers to answer a few questions so read on for tips on booking a wedding DJ and some great suggestions for first dances & boogie tunes. For a start, I’d like to suggest reading the interview below while listening to their super groovy “Wedley” of wedding music. My favourite bit would obviously be the Justin Timberlake section 🙂
Wedding Smashers’ Wedley by omggettingmarried
1. How did the Wedding Smashers start?
By chance really..Noah and I had been DJing together since we were at school ten years ago and back then, we had gained this reputation for playing these genre spanning sets at a time when being eclectic wasn’t really the done thing. We heard Lucy playing The Chain by Fleetwood Mac (a favourite song from our favourite band) at one party and immediately hit it off! We realised that we all shared a massive love for 80’s Pop songs, records from our parents’ collections and Old Skool Garage! (a genre that was really only big in London circa late 90’s) We used to joke about how we should become wedding DJs due to this somewhat strange love for old pop records but never imagined that we would do something like Wedding Smashers until we randomly were asked to play a few weddings in the summer 2008.. and from there the concept was born. The name is partly a play on the film ‘Wedding Crashers’ but also works because to “smash it” is sort of the British equivalent of “to kill it” or to “tear it down” and is a widely used term in the DJ world. (Apologies if you are familiar with the term!) So we registered the business in 2009 and set about our mission to finally bring great DJs to the wedding scene. We soon realised that there was an abundance of amazingly talented and creative people pushing all sorts of boundaries in the UK wedding industry but that the black sheep of the family, The DJ, still hadn’t moved on from bad suits, cheesy lights and excessive microphone action! This gave us even more reason to change things..
2. What sort of services do you provide? Do you focus on one genre of music or offer a variety of tunes?
We play a massive variety of music from 50’s R&B/ Soul to modern day Top 40 hits. Good music is Good music in our opinion. We now have eight fantastic DJs on our books (including the original trio) and operate more like an Agency, to help us cater for all the wonderfully different parties we do. We supply sound systems and equipment as part of the service BUT the main objective for us is to act as Music Consultants (for want of a better title) and to help people build their Playlists, encourage them to select the songs that are personal to them, their friends and their families and to not play it too safe in order to “please everyone”.
It’s impossible to please everyone at one time especially at a wedding where you have such a wide range of people of all ages. So we show people that the best way to make everyone feel included and is to first play the classics that all the family will love for an hour or two and then play the music that you and your friends want to hear for the remainder of the party.
3. What makes you different from other DJs and how do you work with brides / grooms?
We stand out as DJs due to our ability to read a crowd and bring a fun energy to the party. We believe that it is our job as entertainers to entertain so you’ll often find us dancing behind the decks almost as much as the folks on the d floor! We also make sure we dress sharper than any other DJs too!
We try to work with brides and grooms in same way as we would work with friends. This may sound “unprofessional” but we find it’s the best way to get to know what kind of Music people really want to hear at their party. We’re great for the music lovers who know what they want because we share their passion for music but we’re also great for helping people who don’t necessarily know what they want, find a winning formula.
In the past, we’ve built some amazing bonds with couples. Most have been so grateful to us for hammering home our belief that the Music requires as much thought and planning as the cake, dress and photographer does. The fact is that if the DJ is rubbish then that’s what people will go home remembering at the end of the night. The next morning when the hangover is thumping, people won’t remember how the food tasted and how great you looked, they’ll only remember if the Music was good or not.
4. What’s the best job you’ve ever worked on and why?
That’s a really tricky one- there have been so many great weddings over the past three years. We’d probably have to say that the first wedding we ever did was the best though, as we’ll always remember the first one especially because the two people who got married were very close to us and that’s when Wedding Smashers was conceived.
5. What would be your top 5 first dance songs?
1. God only knows by The Beach Boys
2. Be my baby by the Ronettes
3. Time after time by Cyndi Lauper
4. Total Eclipse of the heart by Bonnie Tyler
5. That’s us/Wild combination by Arthur Russell
6. What would be your top 5 “Get on the dance floor NOW!” songs?
1. The Cure – Close To Me
2. Michael Jackson – P.Y.T
3. Sweet Dreams – Eurythmics
4. Pump up the Jam – Technotronic
5. This is how we do it- Montell Jordan
7. What can we expect to see from you guys next?
Well we’re launching a new website this summer which will feature lots of cool features and a more advanced blog than the one that is currently up on our site. We want the website to become a hub for all things ‘Wedding Music’ and for it to be a massive source of inspiration for anybody looking for alternative options and ideas. We would like the business to keep growing until Wedding Smashers is a household name- we believe the brand has enormous potential.
We are super excited to be starting our first regular party this summer too. It’s to be held every three months at a top secret London location and the doors will be open to all! The main reason we are doing this is to give engaged couples a chance to get a taste of what we bring to a party. It will also be an opportunity for them to sample lots of goodies provided by a select group of vendors so it will be something in between a wedding fair and a club night! It’s going to be a lot of fun!
You can also expect to see more bow ties being added to our ever growing collection! (OMG *LOVE* Bow ties)
8. Any advice for a bride to be?
Choose a DJ like you would choose a husband!
9. What else do you want OMG readers to know?
That we’ve finally learnt how to use twitter! (Hooray! Now follow them immediately – www.twitter.com/WeddingSmashers)
Make sure to check out the Wedding Smashers’ website for more details and have a fab weekend!
