Introducing OMG Sponsor Benjamin Toms

In an effort to round up this fabulous Monday on an even more fabulous wedding note, I have the lovely Benjamin Toms on the bloggity blog! Benjamin is a UK wedding photographer with a passion for photography, travelling and dogs. Having grown up toting his camera around with him wherever he went, he spent his early years developing his first photos in the darkroom in family’s barn! Have a read below to get to know him better and make sure to head on over to his website and blog for more details. Have a good one!

1. OMG Tell us a bit about yourself?
I know it’s a bit of a clique and I’m sure you’ve read it a million times before on other photographers websites, but I really was the kid at school who always had his camera with him. However when I was at school there were no digital cameras, so the hours that I now spend on Photoshop were spent in a darkroom. I was lucky to have my own darkroom in the corner of a barn on the farm I grew up on in Suffolk. This is why I love B&W photography so much. I took A-level photography at school and went on to study an art degree at Canterbury Christ Church. Fordwich, which is just outside Canterbury, is where I now live with my wife who I met at university. It was after I finished my degree that I discovered my other big passion in life “travel”. My gap year lasted nearly a decade as I travelled 6 continents taking pictures as I went. After shooting a couple of friend’s weddings in Australia, I found a passion for wedding photography. It made me realize that shooting weddings was what I one day wanted to do for a living. After spending a year backpacking my way home overland from Australia I was broke to say the least. We ended up moving to London in search of jobs and I took a job with the Flight Centre selling holidays and after a fantastic six years it brought me back to Canterbury where I opened a branch. It was a great company to work for and I learnt a lot about running a business but I fell out of love with going to work and sitting in a shop each day which was invariably very quiet during the recession. So, I made one of the scariest but best decisions of my life to become a wedding photographer, and here I am 3 years into running Benjamin Toms photography and have never looked back.

2. Describe yourself in 3 words
Friendly / Discrete/ Natural

3. What do you wish all couples knew about you?
I love to immerse myself in your big day capturing all the beautiful and important details, working in a discrete way. I also love to travel so if your getting married in London or LA (or anywhere else in the world) please feel free to get in touch, I ‘d love to chat to you about your wedding photography. All my wedding packages include an album from the Queensberry range and I really love working with my couples to make sure each one I produce is unique and personal to them.

4. If you could give brides 1 tip, what would it be?
Relax and take time to enjoy your day, as it will fly by.

5. If you could give grooms 1 tip, what would it be?
Basically the same as above, and not to drink too much before your speech.

6. Any wedding / wedding industry pet peeves?
Spot colour processing in photo’s just isn’t my cup of tea.

7. Where do you see your business in –
1 month – My 2012 wedding season will be getting into full swing so I am really excited about the amazing couples I’ll be working with this year.
1 year – Hopefully getting ready for a full 2013 season with some amazing weddings from OMG readers.
5 years – For my business to have kept growing in success so that my wife does not need to get up at the crack of dawn to commute to London and can be part of it herself. Also to have a studio in Whitstalbe with space for a darkroom.

8. Anything else you want to share?
Please take a few moments to have a look around my website and blog and if you like what you see feel free to get in touch. I would love to have a chat with you about your wedding photography.
